A Direct and Pragmatic Approach to Coaching

In my coaching practice I prefer a direct and pragmatic approach to guide my clients toward achieving their goals and overcoming the challenges they face along the way. My methodology incorporates a variety of proven tools and techniques, including:

  • IPEC’s Proven Record of Coaching Success: Leveraging a recognized coaching framework to ensure effective results.
  • Person-Centered Approach: Drawing on clinical ideas pioneered by Carl Rogers to create a supportive and understanding environment.
  • Narrative Reframing: Utilizing concepts from Cognitive Behavioral Theory, Narrative Theory, and Solutions Focused Theory to help clients adapt and problem-solve effectively.

Coach's Role

While I possess a personal and academic understanding of anxiety and depression, it’s important to clarify that I am a coach, not a clinical therapist. From a coaching perspective, the focus is not on past experiences or feelings, but on guiding you to discover the best path forward toward your desired future.

Philosophical Framework

Some of the things you believe about yourself will propel you to great accomplishments. Other things might slow you down. Together, we can explore some of these ideas and figure out which assumptions, interpretations, and beliefs are helpful and which ones may be holding you back.

The Difference Between Coaching and Therapy

Therapy can be invaluable if you're feeling overwhelmed or anxious. A good therapist can help you navigate those feelings. As your coach, my goal is to empower you with the skills to navigate life's challenges—teaching you how to swim, build a boat, and choose your direction rather than simply keeping you afloat. This approach represents a fundamentally different process.

Focusing on Agency

In coaching, your self-confidence stems from the belief that your challenges and goals are puzzles to be solved. Together, we will focus on your agency by discussing the following key elements:

  • Your Goals: Where do you want to go? What do you wish to accomplish?
  • Your Values and Boundaries: What is important to you, and what limits do you want to set?
  • Your Resources and Skills: What tools do you have at your disposal to tackle challenges? (Yes, even a wheelbarrow can be beneficial—don’t forget to mention it!)
  • The Challenges and Roadblocks: What obstacles are standing in your way or slowing you down?

Once we identify these aspects, we can assemble the puzzle pieces into a workable solution.
